Preparing for CVSA International Roadcheck 2022

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has set this year’s International Roadcheck for May 17-19.

International Roadcheck is a three-day, high-volume commercial motor vehicle inspection event carried out by CVSA-certified inspectors in Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. to promote, educate, and enforce motor carrier, vehicle, and driver safety compliance.

International Roadcheck is the largest targeted enforcement program on CMVs in the world, with nearly 15 trucks or buses inspected (on average) every minute across North America during a 72-hour period.

During this initiative, inspectors will conduct North American Standard Inspections of CMVs and drivers to identify any critical violations. These inspections may occur at weigh and inspection stations, on patrols, and at temporary inspection sites.

Inspections during the Roadcheck period are no different than inspections conducted throughout the year; the only difference is a data collection focus on specific inspection criteria.

2022 Focus: Wheel Ends

With each year’s Roadcheck event, the CVSA announces a focus on a specific element of roadside inspections to address common critical vehicle or driver violations. For this year’s focus, inspectors will be paying special attention to wheel ends.

Wheel end components are critical to safe braking and serve to support heavy loads while maintaining load stability and vehicular control.

Violations involving wheel end components historically account for about 25% of the vehicle out-of-service violations discovered during International Roadcheck. Past International Roadcheck data routinely identified wheel end components as a top 10 vehicle violation.

Failure of these components can lead to a serious accident. Fortunately, wheel end issues/violations can be largely avoided by checking the condition and location of components. It is critical to safety for drivers to know how to check for signs of equipment needing maintenance or replacement.

Identifying wheel-end or wheel-bearing problems before issues result may save drivers and carriers from hazardous driving situations, expensive roadside towing, and time-consuming, costly repairs.
